The Golden Rule Has Disappeared

Whatever happened to the golden rule? It seems we have forgotten it. The Golden Rule has disappeared. “Do unto others as I would have done unto me.” That’s how I learned it. I try to live by it—not easy!
The Golden Rule has been written many ways, but the meaning is always the same: treat other people the way you want to be treated.
TV and Social Media
I watch network news shows and cringe. I think, “I wouldn’t want anybody to say anything like that about me.” I see people up in another person’s face and I think, “I wouldn’t want to be treated that way.” I see social media feeds and wonder, “How can they say such derogatory things about another person or group? Somehow the Golden Rule slipped their minds.”
The World Stage

I see wars. Not a Golden Rule in sight. Troops and their superiors all need to enter wars with the Golden Rule tattooed on their hearts. The killing and destruction would stop! I hear about human trafficking. Would the human trafficker want to switch places with the victim? The number of overdose deaths in the US is staggering. Would that drug dealer want to be on the other side of the transaction?
We Need Solutions
I always admire someone who brings up a problem and then offers solutions. In my book, How to NOT Lose Friends and Fight with Other People, I talk about the employee who comes to their boss with a problem—but with no ideas on how to solve it. I’ve been that boss, and an employee who does that just sounds like a pathetic whiner.
I’m the whiner here. I have no solutions, but I do have a suggestion. Invite the Golden Rule into your heart. Share it. Live it. Help the people of the world learn its power! Let’s work together for an change!
