This has got to be the best video yet, which explains keywords and the importance of imlimenting them in various places.
Great Video Phil! One comment you make that is so true is about marketers “guessing” at keywords. I see this every single day. The other mistake they make is they get caught up in “vanity” keywords. What I mean when I say that is those keywords that they think they should rank for but don’t, regardless whether those keywords actually hold any real value or not. For example, does a company selling audio-visual equipment really want to rank on page 1 Google for the term “microphones” ? Yet I’ve seen it time and again where companies want to rank for broad terms that really hold no value. How about go after “Shure Microphones” instead? Still might be very difficult to get to page one, however, at least if you did you would be getting traffic better targeted to what you are selling. If you are selling microphones, ranking for a broad term like “microphones” is going to get you traffic from people doing research, looking for parts, looking for all kinds of microphones, many you probably don’t even sell. Three conversions out of ten visitors is better than 3 conversions out of 3000 visitors, because you probably spent way less time and money getting the 3 out of 10. Keyword research is the absolute number one first thing I do when beginning an SEO project for someone. Spending a lot of time here, will save you time writing and produce better results from your SEO project.

Phil, tbis was a great video. People seem to use keyword research for URLs, but forget about it for articles, meta descriptions, blog comments, etc. Do you have particular numbers that you look for when picking keywords?
Thanks Adrienne. As far as numbers, there’s a lot more to keywork research than just the number of searches. It’s all about competition. You have to go look at what is on the search results and see who they are and how aggressive they are. When you get lucky you can find something that people are ranking for more by mistake than by plan. There’s your opportunity. Look at the big picture.
